You may have noticed that I haven’t been posting much at all in the last two months. The reason for this prolonged absence is because I am now the proud owner of an Xbox 360 and have become completely addicted.
Over the last four years I have been a devoted PS2 gamer, and never really paid much attention to the Xbox at all, which is why I initially planned on buying a PlayStation 3. With the PS3 being as expensive as it is ($600US), I tried to put my bias aside and actually research the next generation consoles.
I eventually purchased at the Xbox 360 after weighing several factors.
Game Library
Most of the games that I am interested in are either Xbox 360 exclusives such as Gears of War, or are available on both the PS3 and Xbox 360.
Online gaming infrastructure
From what I have read it seems as though Xbox Live is a much more fully realized service with a very large community of gamers.
Grand Theft Auto IV simultaneous launch on Xbox 360 and PS3
This, I admit, was probably my biggest reason for me considering the Xbox 360 in the first place. GTA IV is the first installment since I started playing GTA that will launch on anything other than the PS2. In recent news Microsoft has spent 50 million dollars to secure exclusive downloadable episodic content for the Xbox 360. I have already pre-ordered my copy, and can foresee a time in the future where I will neglect my blog again.
Price
The PS3 is effectively $100 cheaper than the Xbox 360 when taking the PS3’s out of the box wireless networking and Blu-ray capabilities into consideration. The wireless networking card is $100 for the Xbox and the external HD-DVD drive is around $200 bumping the price of the Xbox 360 Pro package to $700. From what I have been hearing lately it seems as though Blu-ray is going to beat the HD-DVD in the high definition format shootout.
I don’t really care about HD content, and am primarily concerned with the quality of the gaming experience so I didn’t really factor it into my decision.
Other Factors
I have a fairly large library of PS2 games (30 plus), and it appears that quality games will continue to be produced for the PS2 at least in the short term. Also, many used PS2 games can be had for next to nothing.
I thought that buying the Xbox 360 while keeping the PS2 was a better rounded setup in terms of available games than PS2 + PS3 setup as the PS3 is backward compatible with PS2 games. Maybe someday I will buy a PS3, but before that happens the price must drop considerably and more exclusive PS3 games that I am interested in will need to be released.
The Package
I bought the Xbox 360 system that comes bundled with a wireless controller and a 20gig hard drive. I also purchased a wireless networking card, a second controller, and a one year subscription to Xbox Live Gold.
Impressions
I am very impressed with the Xbox 360 so far. The games I have played look amazing, online gaming is solid, interface and networking is fairly painless. Xbox Live Marketplace has alot of interesting downloadable content, almost none of which is free. Xbox Live Arcade seems cool, but some of the games seem very expensive for what they are. The concept of achievements and gamer scores are really nice, and in my opinion boost the replay value of games significantly.
I initially thought that the Xbox 360 had a less comfortable controller in comparison to the PS2, but after playing the Xbox 360 for a few weeks, the PS2 controller feels tiny and awkward.
I have been playing a lot since my purchase and have played the following games:
I also have Halo 3 on pre-order.
Please let me know if you have any game recommendations or would like to play online sometime.
Note: You will notice that I didn’t consider the Wii in my comparison, which in hindsight I regret, although I think it is still pretty difficult to get your hands on a Wii without considerable effort
